Lesson On Preaching

The goal of preaching should be to give the meaning of the text and then apply that meaning to those who are listening. So after listening to a sermon you should ask yourself these questions:

1. Do I now understand the text of scripture used for the sermon. A preacher can read a text and then talk about a topic for 40 minutes and when he is done you still have not learned about the actual text of scripture!Take the time to look back over the text of scripture used in the sermon and see if you really learned abut it!

2. Was the meaning of the text applied to my life. There may have been application given but was it taken from the meaning of the text?

Now here is your homework:

Read the following passages of scripture:

1 John 3:18-21

Acts 15:6-12

Outline what is found in each passage

Write out the questions you have about the contents of each passage:

Listen to the following sermons:

After listening write down your thoughts:

Was the passage of scripture clearly taught?

Was the meaning of the text clearly applied?

Post your thought and findings in the comment section.
